Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Central-Alameda Homeowners Choose HeatShield Chimney Cleaning

We provide independent HeatShield chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair service throughout Central-Alameda, including the pre-1940 bungalows and Victorians that define the neighborhood’s older blocks. What sets our HeatShield work apart is that we don’t just sweep the flue and call it done. We inspect the entire system, including the crown, cap, and termination point, because those are the spots where HeatShield-lined chimneys in Central-Alameda actually fail.

Call (866) 282-7014

Here’s the thing most homeowners don’t hear until it’s too late: a HeatShield liner is only as good as the crown sitting above it. In Central-Alameda, where salt air off the estuary and seismic settling crack chimney crowns on a regular basis, water gets behind the liner and starts undoing the bond from the top down. That’s the failure we see most often on HeatShield systems in this neighborhood, and it’s the reason our cleaning visits always include a hard look at the top of the chimney, not just the flue walls.

Tidewater Chimney Sweep is an independent chimney and venting specialist. We are not authorized, sponsored, or warranty-endorsed by HeatShield. What that means for you: we have no incentive to sell you a HeatShield job when a different repair makes more sense. We’ll tell you straight if HeatShield is right for your chimney or if you’d be better served by a rebuild, a different liner system, or a crown repair alone.

Why Trust Tidewater Chimney Sweep for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?

HeatShield resurfacing and relining is not a product you want a generalist touching. The material is a castable refractory that has to be mixed, pumped, and cured to spec. Get the thickness wrong, apply it over a dirty substrate, or rush the cure, and the liner delaminates within a season or two. Our crew has installed and inspected HeatShield systems across Alameda’s older housing stock long enough to know which flues take a castable liner well and which need a full rebuild instead.

Duane Cisneros, our owner, grew up in Central-Alameda and spent the better part of two decades working chimneys across South LA before running Tidewater. He’s seen South Gate HeatShield service done right on flues still holding up years later, and he’s seen it fail where someone cut a corner. That’s the difference in how we approach HeatShield work: we treat the crown and water intrusion as part of the liner job, because in Central-Alameda they are.

We also stock genuine HeatShield materials rather than whatever the local hardware store carries. The mixing ratios, cure times, and application thicknesses are what make the system hold. Substitutes void the whole point of choosing HeatShield in the first place.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Central-Alameda

  • CeCure liner failure at the top termination. The HeatShield CeCure Sleeve Relining System does its job in the flue, but when the crown above it cracks, rain runs behind the liner at the termination point. We see this constantly in Central-Alameda, where estuary salt air accelerates crown spalling. The fix starts with the crown, not the liner.
  • Delamination over oil-canned clay tile. HeatShield resurfacing bonds to the existing flue wall. If the original clay tile was badly spalled or “oil-canned” (warped from heat) before the coating went on, the bond only holds as well as the substrate does. We strip failing areas back to sound material and reapply rather than coating over more damage.
  • Firebox mortar cracking at the brick joint. HeatShield FireGuard refractory repair mortar handles heat well, but the joint between the patched firebox and the surrounding brick is a weak point under repeated heating cycles. We repoint the surrounding brick at the same time so the repair doesn’t tear itself apart.
  • Liner sections pulling from the flue shoulder. On offset or corbelled flues, an oversized or wrong-shape CeCure sleeve can separate at the shoulder where the flue changes direction. This is a spec error, not a material defect, and it means the liner has to be removed and the flue properly measured before redoing the work.
  • Water intrusion staining above the firebox opening. Smoke staining on the brick above a fireplace opening is often blamed on draw, but in Central-Alameda it’s frequently water getting in through a cracked crown and traveling down into the firebox area. We find this during HeatShield cleaning visits and fix the crown before it gets worse.

HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

For HeatShield resurfacing and relining work, we use genuine HeatShield materials. There’s a reason for that: the CeCure system and the Resurfacing System both rely on specific mix chemistry and application thickness to hold up to flue temperatures. An aftermarket refractory that’s close but not the same will fail early, and then you’re paying twice.

We stock common HeatShield materials for firebox repair and touch-up work locally, which means we can often handle small repairs like firebox patching or crown sealing without waiting on a parts order. For full CeCure relining or complete flue resurfacing, we order materials to suit the specific flue dimensions and condition.

On the repair-vs-replace question, we’re straightforward. If your flue is spalled past the point a liner can bridge, we’ll quote a rebuild rather than sell you a HeatShield job that will fail. A liner bonds to the substrate. If the substrate is gone, the liner goes with it. Call (866) 282-7014 and we’ll tell you which side of that line your chimney is on.

Our HeatShield Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We run a Level 2 inspection, which means a video scan of the flue interior, not just a visual check from the top and bottom. For HeatShield-lined flues, we’re specifically looking at the termination point, the bond at the flue shoulder, and any areas where the original clay tile is showing through.
  2. 2
Repair or resurface. Depending on what the scan shows, we’ll strip failing HeatShield material back to sound substrate, repoint firebox brick with HeatShield FireGuard mortar, resurface the flue, or install a CeCure sleeve if the flue needs a full reline. We also address the crown and cap at this stage, because skipping them is how liners die early in Central-Alameda.
  3. 3
Test. After the repair or install, we run a test burn to confirm the draw is clean and there’s no smoke spillage. We also re-scan the flue to verify the liner is uniform and properly bonded.
  4. 4
Warranty and documentation. You get photos and a written report of everything we found and everything we did. If your chimney has a remaining manufacturer’s warranty on the HeatShield system, we document the work so you have records if you ever need to file a claim.

We were called to a 1920s bungalow off Central Avenue where the homeowner’s firebox mortar had crumbled and smoke was staining the brick above the opening. Our tech ran a Level 2 inspection, found the clay tile flue cracked behind a previous HeatShield service in Boyle Heights that had been applied over uncleaned, sooty brick, and stripped it back before resurfacing with fresh HeatShield material and repointing the firebox. The draw pulled clean on test burn and the crown got a crack seal so the same water intrusion wouldn’t undo the work.

HeatShield Products We Service & Install in Central-Alameda

We service the full HeatShield product range, including the CeCure Sleeve Relining System for cast-in-place flue relining, the Resurfacing System for damaged clay tile flue interiors, FireGuard refractory repair mortar for firebox and smoke chamber repair, and HeatShield crown and smoke-chamber repair products.

In Central-Alameda specifically, the two systems we work with most are the Resurfacing System on older unlined or clay-tile chimneys that need interior stabilization, and FireGuard mortar on fireboxes that have seen decades of wood-burning use. Full CeCure relining is the right call when the original flue is too far gone to resurface, which is common on bungalows that never had a proper liner to begin with.

We Also Service These Brands

HeatShield is one of several professional-grade systems we install and service. We also stock and work with DuraFlex stainless steel relining products and Gelco chimney and venting components. If a stainless liner makes more sense for your flue than a castable refractory, we’ll tell you that without hesitation. One company should give you the right material for the job, not just the one they happen to sell.
